  1. Description: A web page describing the process of creating a logo.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): The only program I used was Notepad++. I had a little bit of background knowledge about HTML, so I knew the basics. Yet, when we were introduced to CSS, it was a whole different language for me. After playing around with both (HTML and CSS,) I got the hang of it. I really enjoyed doing this project. The design part of it was a little difficult to organize because there was so much that could be done. I had a hard time getting the right size for the logo. Until I figured the problem that was causing me to not have the size that I wanted. I had to delete a code in CSS in order to play around with the size of my logo. I decided to keep the title of the webpage in a different typography than the rest of the body copy. I felt like it made it stand out more. Also, I did this so that there could be a hierarchy between all sections of the webpage. The colors of the webpage were based on the colors of the logo. That created a simple flow of both colors and design.
  3. Message: The company’s message is to create the event of everyone’s dreams.
  4. Audience: Anyone who wants or needs someone to plan their social event.
  5. Top Thing Learned: How to distinguished and read HTML and CSS code.

Even with the Valley

Tuesday afternoon, I heard (through social media) some sad, horrible, and unexpected news. It had to do with my High School principal. The story is here:

http://www.valleycentral.com/news/story.aspx?id=1215268#.VXkM3flViko

I never thought it would affect me so much, but it did. Now, since I have to write a blog post about something that I’ve been noticing that obviously has to do with Public Relations, I chose to write about this. The reason for this, is because I’ve learned that the more I am passionate about things, the better they get. And it’s true in all cases. If it wouldn’t, why and how would people succeed at doing their job? (Think outside the box.)

Anyway. Sad story. Shocking, still.

In the PR perspective, there were so many things I thought about when I found out.

First, people need to speak up. And when I say people, I mean the school district that he works for; IDEA Public Schools. Then, to my surprise, they did spoke up. Here’s another article that went out to the public June 10.

http://www.themonitor.com/news/local/idea-school-principal-accused-of-assaulting-off-duty-officer/article_64f6d6e2-0fbd-11e5-9e61-2b4e56e434c1.html

Spokeswoman, Vanessa Barry said these words:

“Mr. De Leon was allegedly involved in an altercation with an off-duty police officer. Mr. De Leon maintains his innocence, and we trust him at his word.”

“Over the next few months, he and his family will be working to clear his name and get these accusations dismissed. Pending the outcome of the investigation, we will determine if disciplinary action is warranted.”

“In the meantime, we are not rushing to judgment and encourage you not to do so as well.”

I LOVE THAT.

I am not justifying his actions. I just enjoy and love seeing how much IDEA, where I graduated from, truly cares about this employee. The best thing about it, its they are putting it out there. IDEA is speaking up and using the best and formal words anyone else could use. They are showing the public that their money and success is not a priority to them. Instead they are showing how much they understand that every employee they hire is still an imperfect human being. And I’ll repeat it once again – I love that!

Not only are they speaking up and defending their loved employee, but they are also asking the public to step aside from judgement. More than anything, I think this speaks so much of what IDEA Public Schools is all about.

I am proud to say I am an IDEA graduate. I am also proud to say how much they take me in consideration. Their love for their employees is far beyond what they care about their success. And that is what makes them so successful.

Lugo Weddings and Events

  1. Description: I really enjoyed and struggled with this assignment. I sketched a lot of random ideas that would come to my mind. Then, when I started working on my drafts I noticed I hadn’t added a shape. It made a huge different when I added an image/drawing. I got the idea of the rose from google (just the top). The bottom part of the rose was created by me. I used a lot of the brush tool to do the drawings. Then, I had to fix all of the corners by using the Direct Selection tool. Then, I used the Pen tool to give the image a more exact shape.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): Adobe Illustrator
  3. Message: To promote events planners (Lugo company).
  4. Audience: Adults that are celebrating something.
  5. Top Thing Learned: How to use the Direct Selection tool.
  6. Color Scheme and Color Names: Monochromatic – Gold.
  7. Title / Body Font Names & Categories: Housegrind Personal Use Only (Title), and Century Gothic (Body)

Life and legacy of an incredible man

Saturday night, I received a sad news about a man I’ve never met but loved so dearly. Elder L. Tom Perry, from the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, passed away Saturday afternoon (3:00 p.m). I had never thought the death of an apostle would affect me so much. But it did.

It affected me so much, that as soon as I found out he had passed away, (and the news got to me through Facebook,) I was on it for the past hour or so. I kept searching more information or if someone had posted something about.

After many tears and prayers in my heart, I finally received something.

At around 7 o’clock, the Church released a video about this dear and loving man. Here it is:

https://www.lds.org/prophets-and-apostles/biographies/elder-l-tom-perry?cid=HP_day_date_dPAAST_PERY_xLIDyL1-B_&lang=eng

I think it is so interesting and fascinating, how the Church’s PR is prepare for these kinds of situations. Elder Perry had been sick for a long time and I’m pretty sure during this time, the Church put together this video with interviews of individuals that are very close to Elder Perry.

Thinking back at the book Practices of Public Relations, which is the textbook I use for a class, I remembered many a few topics that are needed while being a PR practitioner. They are:

1. Prepare

2. Knows the audience

3, Establishes a connection with the audience

4. Uses words that are touching to the public.

These are just a few of the one that are discussed in the book. These came to mind as soon as I watched the video of Elder Perry.

The Church was ready for this. I’m pretty sure they had been working on this video for a while. Also, I don’t doubt any second that the Church also has a video prepared for all the general authorities.

The Church obviously knows the audience that will see the video. Their objective is to recognize the works that Elder Perry has done within the Church member and non-members. In my perspective, they did a phenomenal job at it.

The video truly showed a simple connection with the public. The word choice they used to them really grabbed anyone’s attention and makes them appreciate who Elder Perry is and how much of importance he is to the LDS community.

Lastly, I want to share a personal experience while watching this video and knowing of Elder Perry’s death. When I found out about his death, I cried like a baby. I could not understand my reactions to his death even after knowing of the Plan of Salvation. It truly touched my heart knowing of the many things Elder Perry did during his earlier years. If the video touched my heart, I’m pretty sure it touched many others whom didn’t know about Elder Perry.

Incredible man we had upon us. His life and legacy, even in the short amount of time that I knew of him, taught me so much that I will always remember him.

Best,

Marivi
